The dark lines or “fringes” in each interferogram represent contour lines of constant density, thus offering a complete quantification of this unsteady flow field at each instant. Dynamic stall is indicated by deflection of the fringe pattern away from the airfoil upper surface, as can be seen in Fig. 1(c). This quantitative flow visualization is a particularly powerful method for conveying information and providing understanding of the critical flow field phenomena. However, for dynamic flows, sequences of moving images are often much more effective than the static images that are often presented.

The elegant filamentary structure and subsequent droplet development is purely electrostatic. No mechanical or aerodynamic forces are involved. Droplet development starts with collapse of the cylindrical charged column into the thick-rimmed, ribbon-like structure seen at the top of the images. The charged cylindrical column of fluid is unstable to small perturbations of the circular cross section of the column. Upon small distortion, the charge, and therefore the fluid that carries it, tends to rapidly migrate to the extremities pulling the column into a thin sheet.
